Modern translations of Russian-language fiction into the Yakut language (based on translations published in the literary almanac “Kurulgen”)

Abstract

Currently, translations of world and Russian fiction into the Yakut language remain poorly  studied, and translations carried out and published over the past two decades have completely fallen  out of the field of research activities of Yakut literature. This article is intended to fill in the missing  link in the history of literary translation of Russian-language literature into the Yakut language,  which will undoubtedly contribute to the modern periodization of literary translation. The choice of the  research topic is due to the relevance of the role and importance of literary translation in the development  of national literatures of Russia. The purpose of the study was to identify and classify modern translations  of Russian-language works of fiction based on translations published in the Yakut-language literary  almanac "Kurulgen" ("Literary Waterfall"). The research material was the publications of the heading  "Tylbaas" ("Translation"), which was continuously published in the issues of the literary almanac "Kurulgen"  from 2006 to the current 2021. Using the continuous method of information search, the authors studied  translations of poetic, prose and dramatic works published in the almanac "Kurulgen"; carried out their  genre and thematic classifications; and also identified the translators published in this almanac. The study  revealed a total of 142 Russian-language fiction translated into the Yakut language, including 125 poetic,  16 prosaic works and 1 dramatic work. The genre classification of literary translations is presented  as follows: poetry – 1 poem, 1 chronicle, 2 songs, 18 rubai and 107 poems; prose – 1 novella, 1 parable,  3 novellas, 3 novelettes and 8 short stories; and 1 dramatic poem written on the theme of heroism. The  journal published translations of works of fiction from 15 nations, done by 25 translators. In the future,  it is planned to further study the translations published in other sources in order to systematize the  modern Yakut literary translation.
