Character-helpers in the figurative system of the epic monsters Abaahy
Abstract
The article deals for the first time with the images of the epic monsters abaahy acting as helpers to the olonkho protagonist. The materials used are early recordings of the olonkho published in 1907-1918 in the academic edition "Samples of the Yakut Folk Literature" by E. K. Pekarsky and olonkho plots recorded by V. L. Priklonsky in 1890-1891. Abaahy monster characters do not always perform the function of an antagonist or a pest. To determine the functions of the characters of the abaahy monsters, V. Y. Propp's method of "circles of action" was used. As a result, the following helper characters were identified: a fair judge; a devoted servant and groom; a character with the soul of aiyy deity and the appearance of an abaahy; a faithful guide; a hospitable old abaahy woman; and a guardian. In order to establish a more complete picture of the imagery system of the epic monsters of abaahy, the task is to continue this topic by applying a comparative analysis using the texts of later editions of the olonkho.
